First Day Recording Interviews at GenCon for our documentary: 50 Years of Fantasy

Arrival and Setup:

We arrived at GenCon excited and ready to start capturing the event. However, we quickly realized we needed another camera. This unexpected challenge took us to Robert’s Camera in Indianapolis, about 15 minutes from the stadium and convention center. It took some time and cost us $2,000 to get the additional equipment, but once we had everything sorted, we were ready to dive in.

Interviews:

Throughout the day, we interviewed a diverse group of people. We spoke with game designers, marketing professionals for game companies, company owners, and notable figures who have worked for Wizards of the Coast. We also engaged with dozens of convention attendees, capturing their experiences with DnD at 50 years, and conducting interviews on the convention floor while people were gaming added a dynamic element to our footage.

Highlights:

The most memorable moment of the day was stepping into Lucas Oil Stadium. The sheer scale of GenCon was awe-inspiring, with over 80,000 attendees gathering to celebrate DnD and play tabletop games with friends from around the world. Among the interviews, I particularly enjoyed my conversation with CJ Gahagan from Rowan, Rook, and Decard, a UK-based game company. They provided a beautifully articulate definition of TTRPGs and DnD, a moment we’ll likely feature in the film.

Interactions and Atmosphere:

The atmosphere at GenCon was incredibly welcoming. Everyone we approached was kind and warm, even when we spontaneously conducted interviews. As part of a special segment for the film, I went on a mission to collect as many three-word descriptions of DnD as possible, which added a fun and interactive component to our project.

Challenges and Solutions:

Once we resolved the initial camera issue and completed our setup, everything went smoothly. The day was a success, with no significant technical or logistical problems.

Personal Reflections:

By the end of the day, I felt energized and excited for what was to come. The positive interactions and compelling interviews left us ready and eager for the next day’s adventures at GenCon.
